I am guessing that in response to the many many many people who have stated the truth again and again that 'Gator is spyware', the company formerly known as Gator will now be known as Claria.
I'd like the be first to introduce you to Claria, a new breed of spyware.
So...
Claria is spyware.
Claria is spyware.
Claria is spyware.
Claria is spyware.
Thank you.

I'm surprised this Claria is actually legal.
So "Claria" sounds a little kinder and gentler than "Gator" eh?

I'm having the same problem: run Ad-aware 6.0, updated. Then deleted the files... but when i restart the PC, the spyware is still there.
The IE starts in "about:blank", but is not "blank", its a page with a lot of links. And there is a "pop-up" warning me that my pc is infected with spyware.
Thanks to anyone that can help me!

hi i just downloaded ad-aware 6.0 i haven't had the problems just mentioned... i'm totally ignorant to this stuff... but i'm scared to delete the 213+ items identified by the system scan. are they all expendible or are some of them normal and/or important to keep? i don't wanna go deleting so much stuff when i don't know what it is. this all came about when i downloaded msn messenger plus and ignored the recommendation from norton anti-virus to clock incoming 'stuff' ;) since then a search bar called 'Black exit amok' as been on my internet window and keeps redirected my start page.... i wouldn't care too much except it keeps advertising offensive porn.... which my parents don't appreciate. argghhh what's going on?!

it shouldn't do any harm to your pc, but look at all the files listed by opening windows explorer and make sure it isn't something that you want to keep
[Maurice Reeves] - The problem with doing this is that people might accidentally delete something that Windows needs to run, thereby FUBAR'ing their system. This would be very bad. Better to use AdAware, or some such, that is built specifically for finding and destroying spyware.
Thanks for commenting!

Since Kazaa++ and Kazaa Lite are no longer running (unless you consider spyware infested sites where they claim to have the downloads) I downloaded regular Kazaa. I know , I know spyware scum P2P. But i did my research and discovered something called Diet K which (and this is confirmed by reputable download sites) gets rid of all the spyware associated with Kazaa. You run it before you load up Kazaa and you see it get rid of All the spyware, Cydoor, Gator all the garbage. BUT it does have one piece of spyware of its own----Claria. I read that Claria will pop up everytime you start Diet K so you have to run Ad Aware, wait till you get just the one file, Claria, hit abort? ( I guess before it finishes the scan) and then delete Claria and your spyware free on Kazaa.
It would be nice to delete it permanently. Anyone know how?????

Alex, I don't know much about the specific situation you're in, so I can't say for certain. I don't quite understand why you couldn't just run AdAware and get rid of Claria alltogether but still run DietK/Kazaa.
For a while I used BearShare, and I would install it, run AdAware right away and get rid of the files and then continue to use BearShare. Worked like a charm.

After installing Avant update and also Firefox I found 3 spyware items after running Spyhunter (System Mechanic 4)
These were 2020 search, Claria and Webmailspy.
Previously my PC has alays been spyware free.
Any idea where they came from?
Posted by Welshmike | August 8, 2004 4:11 AM

Mike, I can only guess that something else was installed on your computer, either through your efforts, or through someone else using your computer. The Avant Browser and Firefox both do not contain spyware, and as long as you got them from their original download source, they would not have been bundled in.
So, perchance did anything else get installed?

1. Oops! I did not expect my email address to appear on your helpful forum; rather remiss of me. Please can you delete it from my earlier posting before I get more spam.
2. No one else uses my computer. I got Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/download.html?http%3A//ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/0.9.3/FirefoxSetup-0.9.3.exe

Claria really bugs me, and, because of it, I can only visit one website at a time! I close Google. I then activate System Mechanic and select its latest spyware list. Claria is usually detected and then removed. System Mechanic is then shut down and I open Google again. A new website is visited, but after Google is closed, Claria is the again! I use Pest Patrol for more thorough scans.

I'm surfing for info on Claria, because I am so PO'd at it. So! Gator by any other name. I should have known.
Years ago, I used that program by Gator for filling in passwords. One day I woke up and realized it was just wrong. So, I started deleting it.
Gator informed me via the software that even if I deleted it, I would not be able to get rid of it. Can you imagine the arrogance of those that wrote this program to openly put in the software a function telling me I was stuck with it? That only told me that I was right to get rid of it.
I do a lot of surfing. Gator, now Claria, is the single most thing that gets in my computer. It routinely installs registry keys behind my back. Occasionally, I'll visit some site where Gator pops up and asks me if I want to install the software. I always say no, but I always have a registry key installed anyway without permission. As soon as I see the question, I know I have to run Ad-aware.
I HATE Gator. I HATE Claria.
Also, I hate Red Sheriff, but to a lesser degree.
I use Ad-aware. Always remember to update Ad-aware is what I have recently learned, as 1) it's free, and 2) the updates will turn up stuff that you never knew were there. Thank you, Ad-aware, for this terrific program.
Thank you for allowing me to vent.
Down with the evil, annoying, arrogant Claria/Gator. I hope someone sues the jerks. Again, and again, and again, until their corporation dies.

hey guys. maybe we should send a petition or something to claria.
today, i sent this to them:
Your company is doing great, and your products are truly wonderful for the other companies. However, your products have harmed many people by installing spyware\adware on the victims' computers and tracking the victims' online behavior in order to deliver behavior-tracking advertisements. I personally find this very disturbing, partially because of the amount of spywares and adwares I have to clean from my computer everyday.
My suggestion is that you should use some more friendly programs that do not respawn when deleted, find a more accurate, yet easily stoppable method of deleting the programs that can be used by even amateurs. Although I presonally believe that there is nothing wrong with packaging the adwares\spywares with other programs, they should be designed so that the spyware\adware is easily removable and will not disable the host programs. And a banner that says "Claria Included" should be placed on the host programs' webpages, and a brief descrption of your spyware\adware should be provided. Words such as "spyware" and "adware" should be used and definitons of them should be given, instead of describing them as harmless "accurate search result providers". Sugar-coating is a lie, and most people can see right through this.
Thanks for taking your time reading through my suggestions. I truly hope that your company can find sources of money other than ruininging practically everyone in the world's internet experience. Thank you.
well?
what do you think?
you guys should send one too.
may the spyware not be with you

I like Claria. It offers me great and better deals on what I'm looking for while on the internet. If none of you like it, then why did you download it? When it installs itself on computers, they provide you with the terms and conditions.
Posted by I love Claria | December 13, 2004 11:03 PM

Quite wrong. Claria (and any other spyware, by definition) is installed on your computer without your permission. Don't be naive. Sometimes they may ask for your permission, but it's not like what you tell them really matters.
I wouldn't care much about Claria if I could chose whether to have it or not, but that choice is not mine. Honestly, a more diplomatic approach on their part would be more effective, I HATE anything that messes up with my computer, especially without my letting them.
Besides, I'll get rid of Claria even if I have to build myself a process blocker for that purpose. Claria, your resistance is futile.

After countless infuriating computer crashes and realizing that Claria spyware was the cause of the problem, I had the brilliant notion to write to them and complain. Astonishingly, I received a reply within 15 minutes (on a Sunday morning no less)...I assumed it is a canned response and Rex is no doubt some figment of Clarica's imagination, and I have no idea if this will work...but here is what Rex from Claria is advising me to do to get rid of this hideously annoying pest....
"First, adware is totally different than viruses. (Adware is simply any
file or application that is ad supported.) Adware doesn't have the ability
to detect viruses, since it isn't antivirus software. Also, using an
adblocking application or one that looks for ad supported applications can
cause a conflict on the system if you are indeed using an ad supported
application, and that can result in errors or freezes.
Specifically what file is being found, and where is it located?
Using Windows Explorer (steps below if you need them), can you tell me if
any of the following folders; Beach Islands Screensaver, Butterfly Oasis
Screensaver, Christmas Wishes Screensaver, DashBar, Date Manager,
Gator.com, Magic Waterfall Screensaver, Midnight Lake Screensaver, Moonlit
Seaside Screensaver, Mythical Fountain Screensaver, Paradise Lagoon
Screensaver, PrecisionTime, SearchScout Toolbar, Seaside Sunset
Screensaver, SitePass, Turtle Beach Screensaver, Weatherscope,
WebSecureAlert, CMEII, and/or GMT are on the computer?
C:\Program Files\Beach Islands Screensaver
C:\Program Files\Butterfly Oasis Screensaver
C:\Program Files\Christmas Wishes Screensaver
C:\Program Files\DashBar
C:\Program Files\Date Manager
C:\Program Files\Gator.com
C:\Program Files\Magic Waterfall Screensaver
C:\Program Files\Midnight Lake Screensaver
C:\Program Files\Moonlit Seaside Screensaver
C:\Program Files\Mythical Fountain Screensaver
C:\Program Files\Paradise Lagoon Screensaver
C:\Program Files\PrecisionTime
C:\Program Files\SearchScout Toolbar
C:\Program Files\Seaside Sunset Screensaver
C:\Program Files\SitePass
C:\Program Files\Turtle Beach Screensaver
C:\Program Files\Weatherscope
C:\Program Files\WebSecureAlert
C:\Program Files\Common Files\CMEII
C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT
WINDOWS EXPLORER:
To use Windows Explorer, RIGHT mouse click on the Windows Start button and
select Explore from the pop up menu.
When the Windows Explorer window opens, in the LEFT side pane, scroll up
to the very top (so you can see the options for Desktop, My Computer, C:\,
etc.).
Just below those items are folders (listed in alphabetical order), locate
the one called Program Files and click on the plus (+) sign in front of it
to open the folder and display the folders/files inside of it.
Once you can see the folders inside of the Program Files folder, do you
see a folder called Beach Islands Screensaver, Butterfly Oasis
Screensaver, Christmas Wishes Screensaver, DashBar, Date Manager,
Gator.com, Magic Waterfall Screensaver, Midnight Lake Screensaver, Moonlit
Seaside Screensaver, Mythical Fountain Screensaver, Paradise Lagoon
Screensaver, PrecisionTime, SearchScout Toolbar, Seaside Sunset
Screensaver, SitePass, Turtle Beach Screensaver, Weatherscope, or
WebSecureAlert?
Next scroll down and locate the folder called Common Files and click on
the plus (+) sign in front of it.
Once you can see the folders inside of the Common Files folder, do you see
a folder called CMEII or GMT?

Claria adware is downloaded when you download another program. It comes with screensavers and some other programs like that, and it comes with Kazaa. If you want to get rid of the adware, you have to get rid of the parent program too. So if you want to run Kazaa, you have to deal with the adware.

HELP!
This post is different than the others here. I killed Gator on my bosses computer by mistake when I ran a spyware cleanup. He uses this, even though he's aware it's spyware. and now, he wants it back, and doesn't want any of his stored info to be lost. Any advice on where to start?

Claria is not spyware, it is adware. Learn the differences, they are not the same. You can only get Claria/Gator by downloading it either by itself or bundled with another application. You must click "Yes" in order to get Claria/Gator on your PC. You cannot get it just by visiting a website (unless you download, install and click "Yes", agreeing to have it installed on your machine. You can uninstall Claria/Gator at any time through "add/remove programs". Every Claria ad is labled/attributed so that you will know when you are getting a Gator ad. If the border of the ad window doesn't clearly state its from Claria, THEN ITS NOT FROM CLARIA!! Lastly, pop-ups are irritiating, but they are a fact of interent life. Claria ads are at least relevent to what you are interested in (or at least moreso than other pop-up ads).
Feel free to rant and rave about Claria/GAIN/Gator, but you only sound foolish unless you know the facts. Spyware is real and it is a problem, but Claria is not spyware. Don't just install stuff on your PC without READING what you are getting. If you AGREE to something without reading it then you have NO REASON or BASIS TO COMPLAIN.

"claria is good" ??????
BOLLOCKS !
Claria does not allow you to view the EULA, and it tracks your surfing habits. IT IS SPYWARE
http://www.lavasoftnews.com/ms/display_main.php?tac=Claria
Adaware SE personal will get rid of Gator/Claria, but only if System Restore is turned off before running Adaware, then rebooting. If System Restore is not turned off, Gator/Claria will simply re-install itself next time the PC is rebooted.

I agree, the only way you can get claria/gator is to click yes/I agree when prompt, before downloading anything first read any of these agreements, I know that it is annoying and the print is fine but if you want to avoid having a problem with adware you must be aware of what you are installing on your computer.
I just finished surfing on yahoo of in the corner I saw an ad for a beautiful animated butterfly screensaver, I went to the site where I was offered a choice of different screensavers, they were beautiful animated scenes and one in particular caught my eyes, it was a moonlight on a lake scene and I could see that it was there just for me, I was given a choice to dowmload it free but I have great suspicions of anything offered FREE on the internet, I read the agreement and realized that if I wanted to get the screensaver FREE I would have to agree to allow "GAIN" (after a little research I found out that GAIN was actually CLARIA/GATOR) to track anything ANYTHING I did on my computer and sell it.
So my advice is if it says 'FREE' there are strings attached such as CLARIA/GATOR so limit the amount of downloads that are FREE and read carefully any agreements attached, if it says anything about collecting any type of information, regardless of any disclaimers, DO WITHOUT You can do without it, this is the more surer way of reducing adware
