I thought it was Bob Dole's job to sell wood, but hey, whatever...I think the majority of us scratched our heads when Kerry mumbled something about Bush owning a timber business, but leave it to FactCheck to tell us that it's indeed true.
Unfortunately, there are times when the truth is not as compelling as staying on message and when Kerry said that, he kind of deflated.
While I'm here, one thing I'd like to say is that I'm sick and tired of hearing about the middle class. Hey, I'm part of it and all, but you know, it's not supposed to be your end result. The middle class, the middle of anything for that matter is not supposed to be where you stop. It's a moment in the journey, and not the destination.
I'd much rather hear any candidate talk about how they're going to clear the path so we can all move from the middle class into something greater. I haven't heard that yet from the two major party robo-candidates.

I agree with you. During elections, everyone talks about the middle class but I have yet to see anything done by either side. We hear about how the wealthy aren't taxed enough or how the poor do not receive enough funding. The wealthy should not be punished for being wealthy and the "underprivileged" should not be rewarded for not working to full capacity. I don’t mind seeing those who work hard receive a helping hand. I do mind seeing those who know how to work the system live off the rest of us. The middle-class is a hard working class. In general, they perform well and want to make a positive contribution to society.
My sister went to NYU full-time while working multiple jobs and even worked on Clinton’s first presidential campaign (We still love her, anyway.). It wasn’t until she was at graduation listening to one of the speakers talk about several of the underprivileged students who received a free education from NYU that my sister realized how unfair the world is (But whoever said life was supposed to be fair?).
Both my sisters and I have racked up a great deal of student loan debt while those “underprivileged” students are living a life free from college loan debt. It must be nice.
I don't think anything will be done for the middle class because we are neither resented nor pitied. We simply make enough to live "comfortably" and I think both the wealthy and the poor think we should be content that our basic needs are met.
However, as retirement nears for my parents (and I've seen how hard they have worked and how well they provided for my sisters and me), I believe they deserve to be able to retire comfortably and celebrate life. That should be their reward for working hard and raising three children who are making a positive contribution to society. But that isn't the way the world works.
