Learning Hindi

I've been trying to teach myself Hindi, though it's been several months, and I only know a few words. I realized that in the industry that I'm in now (software development) more and more of the people that I'm going to work with are going to be from India, and it would behoove me to be able to speak some of their language back to them, regardless of how well they speak English. I guess for me it's a matter of respect and curiousity. They took the time to learn my language, maybe I should know some of their's.

Once I feel comfortable with Hindi, I'm going to try and learn Bengali, and then Tamil. Those 3 should be enough for me to get by with most everyone I meet.

Plus, if they eventually outsource all of the IT jobs to India, maybe I can work as a liason or manager...just a thought...

That's extremely impressive. I also believe you chose the three languages well, as they definitely cover a majority of the Indian populace, and you cover Pakistan and Bangladesh in the mix (but don't learn Bangladeshi Bengali, it's really slangy in its accent and word-usage). But take it slowly, since Hindi, whether or not South Indians like it, because its place in government and Bollywood films, is truly becoming the lingua franca of India. Indians all across the subcontinent, even though fiercely protective and proud of their state languages, most of which have similar or even far greater literary histories (Tamil and Bengali, are two examples!), are aware of Hindi. Indians outside of India, especially second generations, de facto learn Hindi (a Hindi course I went to was stuffed to the brim with South Indians). Learn Hindi perfectly. By the time you're done with it, Bengali, and even Tamil, though it's rather different, will be much easier.

I would highly recommend Rupert Snell's "Teach Yourself Hindi" book... it's very detailed and goes through the grammar with helpful examples and a running story line... it has heaps of Hindustani vocabulary and many exercises... an excellent book in a field (Indic language study) that unfortunately has few really good English-medium Hindi instructional books.

Rosetta sucks your blood dry.

Aur bhi, jab aap eesay samjhoge, to ek desi dukaan jaakar ek saral Hindi Mala, ya ek chotisi pustak, jisme puri Hindi lipi me likhi hai, kharidein aur padhiyein.

SECRET! My patented method (not really, but it was organic for me) for learning vocabulary really fast? Race through basic grammar and KNOW THE SCRIPT PERFECTLY... then, get a simple book that's entirely in Hindi (a children's book, or a simple essay book meant for young students in India; you'll find it in a local Indian store) and sit with a pen, an exercise book and the Oxford Hindi-English Dictionary (it's amazing, just as good as its name).

Just sit and slowly read through the book, writing down each new word you come across (which will, in the beginning, for a while, be every second word!), look it up and mark a few primary meanings and its type (verb, noun and gender, adj., adv., conj. etc). Soon, you'll have many pages of vocabulary that you can study at your leisure. Then, revisit the book, page by page, until, without the aid of your impromptu vocab list, you can understand what's going on. I can't stress enough knowing the script.

Say each word aloud, over and over again, forcing yourself to make elementary sentences with them, writing down your thoughts utilizing the wordlist that you have thus far.

You'll find that, in the course of looking up a specific word, your eye may alight on others that seem interesting, and in reading about their meanings or etymologies (Sanskrit, Arabic, pure Hindi, Persian, Braj Bholi, etc.) you'll learn a whole lot more.

I can guarantee you that within three months of doing this for three hours a week, your Hindi will be completely transformed.

I am also trying to learn hindi and the books recommended by Shurjendu Dutt are the ones I am trying to get.The ones for beginers.

Bhai Shurjendu Dutt, is there any store you know have these book. Please help me.
