It amazes me that no one has really commented on this yet, but I'll take a stab:
When O'Neill announced in his book that Bush had started planning for war way before 9/11, the Bush Administration's first response was "Well, so did Bill Clinton". This startled me for two reasons:
- The Bush Administration went greath lengths to disavow themselves from the Clinton Administration and every one of its policies. Funny now that they suddenly admit they liked some of them.
- But more damning is this. I don't think that Clinton's plan ever called for a unilateral ground war waged under the pretense of weapons of mass destruction that no one has been able to find or verify.
Holding up Clinton as the predecessor of this war is a red herring. Nothing about what Bush did bears in any way a resemblence to the kind of foreign policy put forward by Clinton.
And I'm amazed that no one else has talked about this.
