I got up early with the O-man and bought Heather breakfast. I also had to get Mother's Day cards (yes typical man, yadda yadda yadda). My plan was to get them yesterday (still too late) but Heather had a lot of shopping she had to do, so by the time she got home to relieve me from child-watching duties it was 9pm, so I couldn't go then.
No big deal.
I served Heather breakfast in bed, and McKenna too, since she had decided at 4 this morning that she really wanted to sleep with us ( I remember I said I wanted to get up early? That was a little earlier than I had wanted, but apparently God had listened and gave me an 18-month-old howling alarm clock ).
5am, I stumble out of bed, put on some shorts and sandals, kissed Heather on the forehead and wished her a Happy Mother's Day, grabbed Owen, who was awake, eating his feet, and talking to the ceiling and we got in the car. First observation, the radio stations at 5am SUCK. I guess they figure no one is listening so they give the people that beg and plead for shows those timeslots. I feel bad for the professional DJs at the for-profit radio stations who have to work in a slot like this to make it anywhere else in life, but you have to start somewhere, right?
I drove to the 24-hour Rite Aid and the rack was picked clean. Luckily I was able to get 3 cards that were actually good and funny and sweet. I wasn't the only one there buying cards, funnily enough, and the clerk looked like I was just one of a procession of hapless losers buying Mother's Day cards at the 9th hour. Well, no like, I was...
Then it was off to Krispy Kreme, happily making it's glazed original fresh and hot. 1 Large Latte and a dozen donuts in my car it was off to Dunkin Donuts to complete breakfast for the house and then home.
Once I'd bought Heather's favorite Coolata and was back home ( before the sun was even high in the horizon ) with a now sleeping Owen, I went upstairs and "surprised" Heather. ( I mean, she knew I'd left the house anyway ). We ate breakfast in bed while Owen and McKenna laid in bed with us and then I fell back asleep.
Two hours later I wake up with McKenna patting me on the head and talking to me and Heather and Owen downstairs.
That's our Mother's Day so far. All in all, it's been a good one.

I had to get a Mother's Day card for my father on Sunday, too. It was just me and two guys in the card store. They looked at me with a guilty expression on their face. I said, "My father is worse than you two. He sent me to get him a card." They laughed and told me the store didn't have anymore cards for husband's. I found a sweet generic Mother's Day card while my father was buying flowers. We brought her back a coffee and Dunkin Donuts.
I hope Heather enjoyed her Mother's Day.
