I swung by Kuro5hin today while waiting for my machine to finish defragging (churn churn churn). I realized immediately why I stopped reading posts there.
The majority of the comments on articles are filled with trolls like this garbage:
Most simple reason to hate breeders is despite overpopulation on this planet already, they happily chose to ignore that fact.Second best reason for hate is breeders' inability to even try to think of some better/new/original way of life. Instead they "choose" the standard life with standard loans, kids, and other basic stuff. I hate'em because I chose life without kids and they aren't helping me, they aren't interested, they only talk about kids and how wonderful they are. They won't even begin thinking about the possibility of what to do about their lives without kids.
The above is a reaction to an article about an uncle watching his nieces and nephews, and learning some things he never knew about kids. It quickly degenerated into the majority screaming about how unethical it is to have kids, and how parents are evil.
Let's put aside the fact of me being a parent for a minute and talk about that. The choice to have children is not set to absolute standards. Procreation happens, and will continue to happen, both in the human race and beyond. To state that all parents are evil because they've had kids is like saying that all cows are evil because they make milk. We have sex because it feels good and it's in our nature to do so.
Yes, it is morally shady for, say, a homeless shifter who doesn't intend to support his chidren to want to have kids, or a child molestor, etc. But for two parents who intend to love and support and raise their children, it shouldn't matter.
The above troll who speaks of overpopulation is blowing fire and brimestone out of his ass. He's spent too much time listening to the alarmists and not listening to calmer folks.
He seems bitter with his own parents and their banality that he's projected it onto everyone that wants or has kids. How I live my life should not be any of his concern, and certainly not a cause for his derision as long as I'm not affecting him, but it's his own emotional energy hating me that he chooses to spend, so whatever. Having kids has got to be one of the most positive experiences I've been through, but the author above would rather I trade that all in and support him instead, even though...he hates me. I don't think he recognizes that contradiction in his own thinking, because he's too busy hating me to examine himself.
And see, that's the kind of crap, the kind of bullshit, that passes for genuine commentary on Kuro5hin. People stand up and applaud when that kind of hobbled-together philosophically weak unexamined dreck gets spewed on everyone and everything. It's like trying to argue with the business end of a septic tank. You might be right, you might be eloquent, but all you'll get in return, is crapped on.
So, I think my machine is just about defragging (why do I smell smoke?) so I'm going to pause now, reboot my machine, wipe the muck off my monitor, and get back to work.

Well, one person in a group says something with which you don't agree. Some, though not all, people in this group agree with it. You still disagree. Rather than accepting that, in any unmoderated debating chamber, there are going to be people espousing views (heartfelt or not) with which you profoundly disagree, you choose to condemn the entire discussion as crap.

Personally, though, I find it amusing that you're criticising 'philosophy', but the body of your criticism consists of an ad hominem attack against a single poster and a fallacy of the lonely fact -- assuming that one is representative of the whole.
[Editor's Note] : Read again. I'm not criticizing philosophy. I'm criticizing "half-baked" philosophy that people, specifically the poster, as deep meaningful commentary. And yes, I do engage in an ad hominen attack against that specific poster, but I make the point that almost ALL of the commentary I've seen at Kuro5hin is on par with that comment I highlighted.
