I went with Heather to Michael's Craft Store today in an attempt to get some items to make an advent's wreath. An advent's wreath is a tradition in parts of Europe (such as Germany where my family is from) (and especially with us Lutherans) that is some sort of round wreath that lies on the table and has a spot for four candles around the edges and one in the center. Each Sunday in Advent, you light a candle in an attempt to count down the weekends until Christmas. It's a time for family to get together and spend some time, eat some cake, and look forward to the holidays.
I don't have one, or should I say, I didn't have one. I made one tonight. I also made a pomander ball, but that's not that exciting. I'm very excited about the whole idea of getting to make one and having it become a family tradition thing. My wife is crafty as well so it's a nice tie between us.
I got some ribbon, some candles, candleholders, a wreath made out of grapevine. But one problem did present itself during the planning of the wreath. The candleholders available at Michael's were for votives and other such fat candles, but I don't want fat candles. I wanted tall ones that would last over several weeks of burning. So I had to find a way to hold the candles in the candleholders. I thought of glue, I thought of foam, but I settled on clay.
I was happy with this solution since clay won't melt or burn if hot wax gets on it, and it's easy to swap out the candles when they burn down. Plus, clay's cheap and easy to replace if it gets dirty.
After all was said and done, I was all the more pleased with the clay because I was given the chance to play with the clay. I made myself a little ghost:
