Some Random Notes

  • Radio One, those retarded demi-lords of radio, have pulled the plug on Y100 here in Philadelphia. It's the only alternative music station in the Philadelphia area, and they just shut it down, without warning, or community discussion, which is certainly their choice (hey it's their radio station, after all), but that doesn't mean you can't tell them where to stick their change at y100rocks.com
  • Speaking of Philadelphia, on my way to lunch last Friday, I was almost jumped by an angry Yankees fan. Walking down the street in, yes Philadelphia, not New York city, mind you, a guy in a delivery van rolls down his window and starts yelling at me (wearing a Red Sox hat, btw) about how it will be another 100 years before we can "rent another championship" and f-this and f-that. So I did not take the high road, I yelled back that he should piss off and stop being so bitter, which caused a whole fresh stream of profanity. I just kept walking, but I imagine that if I had not been with a large group of people from work, it could have ended with him attacking me in the street.
  • I've decided that next year I will start learning Mandarin Chinese. Since, after India, China seems to be a big destination for not only outsourcing of IT, but of economic resources in general, it seems smart.

The Gay Simpson

So the Simpsons episode aired tonight where one of the characters came out today. It was okay. Like all the rest so far this season, this Simpsons episode was not that good, and it wasn't really bad either. It just was.

My guess as to who was not right. I was sure it was going to be Lenny or Carl. But it was

Way to Go Eschaton!

I have to give props to atrios.blogspot.com for scooping that Steven Colbert on the Daily Show was actually a drug mule whose real name is Ted Hitler.

Now that's some real journalism!

The Village

I had occasion to stay at home and I finished watching "The Village". I loved it.

I goddamn loved it, even though I had a strong suspicion what the "secrets" were. I don't know why everyone keeps attacking M. Night Shyamalan. He's trying to do every movie different and follow different visions, but I guess the mewling masses just want carbon copies of "The Sixth Sense" over and over again.

I guess that's why they keep making movies like Booty Call 12 and Look Who's Talking Too Much.

I'd like to be the first to mail Night my check for $100 to keep making movies that entertain me, and by gar, make me think. The rest of you can go wait for the latest sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer.

The Lapse of the Patriot Act

| | Comments (2) | TrackBacks (0)

I want to say that I laud the fact that the Patriot Act will sunset soon, making its heinous and odorous provisions go away, but I fear that the sunset provisions will only open us to the possibility that lawmakers will seize this opportunity to stuff in even more invasive laws, and steal away more liberties.

It's a frightening thought for me that it could get worse.

I'm not going to be happy until I see the thing dead and buried with a stake in its heart.

UPDATE: to the person who corrected my punctuation, thanks. I'm normally very good about those types of things, but I was writing off the top of my head, and in a rush, and a mistake slipped through. Nice to know I'm not the only one who gets frustrated with those types of things. If you haven't already, Anonymous, go grab a copy of "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" by Lynne Truss. It's fabulous.

The Progressing Hindu-fication

I'm getting more and more sucked into all things Indian. Someone at work gave me a stack of MP3s that are songs from Bollywood movies. I watched "Kol Ho Naa Ho" (Tomorrow may never be) and I tried to make some dahl. The dahl did not work out...oh well...cooking is like romance. You sometimes have to be willing to accept some heartache before you find love.

Sometimes the dish just doesn't work out. Like last night...when I made a lumpy gray watery mush that tasted vaguely of cumin and ginger. It was not what I would call appetizing.

Everyone at work says that my Hindi is progressing nicely, and I'm able to read about 1/3rd of the Devanagari script I come across, and I'm able to carry on micro-conversations:
"How are you today?" "Fine, and you?" "Doing great" "Good!"

You know, this is the most fun I've had in a while with an intellectual pursuit. Maybe I've just been starving for something to feed my brain, but I'm glad that I picked this up. My co-workers have been nothing short of amazingly gracious and generous and helpful.

I always worry when I immerse myself in a hobby like this (I guess this is a hobby, since I don't really feel obsessed) that people will mock me, or that my wife or family will say that I'm going too far. I guess that sounds completely neurotic, but it's true. I have this twinge of guilt and fear that one day Heather will say to me: "I don't even know you anymore. Why are you so focused on Hindi" or computers, or writing, or whatever it is that I'm doing. Call me strange, but it's true.

Heather's never really said anything like that before, so it's not like she's given me cause to think she would start now, it's just almost certainly baggage from previous disfunctions.

Oh, and honey, if you're reading this, I love you and miss you, and the cats said "Come home soon".

Boston is the first town since Pittsburgh in 1979 to win both the World Series and the Superbowl in the same year.

That's pretty cool.

I think the game was not that good, and the commercials were downright awful. There were only a few good ones. And they weren't that good. What the hell happened there?

Get yer gun, we're going hunting

There are times that I think public posses, lynchings, and vigilante justice are justified. This is one of those times.

Yoga

I'm getting up earlier in the morning again, so I'm able to write at home instead of on the train, which is nice, and I'm also able to do my yoga in the living room, instead of just feeling guilty about not doing it.

I was getting frustrated though, because I kept trying to find the website of the lady who is on my yoga DVD (Sarah Ivanhoe, sometimes spelled Sara Ivanhoe), and every time I looked up her name on Google, Yahoo, etc, it was filled with tons of commerce sites, and no way to get just her. So, I finally had to dig out the DVD case and find it on there. If it hadn't been on there, I'd never have found it.

So I'm going to put it out there so others can find it: www.yoganation.com. I'm just trying to put a little bit of signal back in the noise.

Update:
The other DVD I really like is "Yoga for Urban Living" by Hemalaya Behl. Same thing with Sara Ivanhoe, I couldn't even find Hemalaya's website until I noticed a mention of it on another website saying that they did her hair and makeup for the website.

I'm kind of frustrated that these people that make a profitable product like yoga videos are completely overshadowed by the commerce. I'm not saying I have an issue with the commerce, because I believe capitalism is very good. I'm more frustratd that Google and Yahoo and MSN Search, et al can't do a better job of moving the person's site to the top of the search results. I know that organizations like Google work to modify their search results to make them more relevant...I don't know. I guess I'm just worried that when I start releasing my line of DVDs on how to be a supreme mack, you all won't be able to find my website because search results will read "How to be the hottest man alive, like Maurice Reeves. DVD $11.99" and "Sizzle when you step, from Maurice Reeves. Audio book $6.99".

Random TV Notes

I was highly disappointed with Boy George on "Kumar's at No. 42". I guess I expected him to be more upbeat and lively, but he just seemed like he was trying way to hard to be cool and catty. It blew.

Also, Comcast took ZeeTV away from me. :( Now where will I go for my frothy Hindi love? Okay, that doesn't sound good...but seriously, how else am I going to watch anything in Hindi unless I catch it on WBYE? When I called to ask them to turn it back on, they said that they couldn't immediately, but apparently many more people like me enjoyed it and want it.

Ash Wednesday is quickly approaching, and with the Lenten season comes my time of fasting again. It started as an idea inspired by my friend Krahulec, and we both took to doing it. So we'll go for it again this year.

We're going to do something akin to Ramadan, with no food eaten while the sun's in the sky, though coffee, tea, and fruit juice are acceptable.

I'm actually excited. This should be fun.
