The Horror of New Orleans

| | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

I cannot fathom the horror of what's happening in New Orleans. I don't even think it's sunk in for most people that a major US city has been completely ordered evacuated because they cannot stop the flooding. I don't think I've ever heard of this happening before. They're going to move everyone out, the prisoners, the ill and dying, those staying at storm shelters, EVERYONE.

That's staggering to me.

Heather and I are looking to find some way to donate food, clothing, and money to the relief efforts but our biggest fear is that if we give these things it won't go to the suffering in the Gulf Coast. I wish there was some DIY charity framework that was transparent and you could track your donations.

Also, speaking of the things happening in the Gulf, I know I'm not the only one that's absolutely fucking horrified and pissed off that Bush was having meetings about Medicare in California while people were dying in their houses. I want to say more but I don't have the composure right now to express it. Instead I'll point you here, which says it much better with pictures than I ever will.

Seriously, Bush is a fuckface.

GMail Adwords Are Prudes

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

I was talking to my friend Latoya via GMail and the subject of masturbating and farm animals came up and for the next few messages in the thread, no adwords appeared next to the message. They were there before masturbating and farm animals came up, and the other messages still had adwords, but apparently the combination of the two made them run away and hide in GMail.

Such prudish behavior!

Where are my contextual ads offering me websites on americanfarmanimalsingles.com inviting me to become a pen-pal to animals locked up at local farms, or a link to places seeking those interested in the exciting field of animal husbandry?

Oh well, maybe next time.

Gunslinger Girl and Comic Books

I got on the train this morning and I really intended to get to work on some code. I yanked the laptop out of my bag and booted it up when suddenly this giant of a black man leaned over and asked me about my laptop. Steve, it turns out, is a huge anime and comic book fan, which was awesome. He wanted to talk to me about being able to watch movies on a laptop on the train.

He kept talking about one anime series called "Gunslinger Girl" which, like almost ALL anime is about young school girls with guns. But apparently this one is the shit. I'm kind of bummed that I put my Netflix account on hold now, because I want to rent it, but I think, based on what he was saying and my own immediate impression of the object, my own instinct, that I should just go ahead and buy the first of the series because I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it.

To the guys who hacked my site, props to you and thanks for not deleting anything. I forgot to check permissions on my site when I did the last upgrade to MT3.2

Thanks! But next time you find a hole like that, just shoot me an email.

Bastards.

Bush said he is aware of the anti-war sentiments of Cindy Sheehan and others who have joined her protest near the Bush ranch.

"But whether it be here or in Washington or anywhere else, there's somebody who has got something to say to the president, that's part of the job," Bush said on the ranch. "And I think it's important for me to be thoughtful and sensitive to those who have got something to say. But," he added, "I think it's also important for me to go on with my life, to keep a balanced life." (Birmingham News)

My friend Chris passed the book "Debugging Indian Computer Programmers: Dude, Did I Steal Your Job" on Saturday. I finished it tonight, and I wanted to share my thoughts on it.

I think that if Owen were to die in combat, I would not have the power to attend the homecoming of his unit, as this father did.

I admire his strength, and I imagine his son was one hell of a Marine.

That's Just Fabulous

I think that it's fabulous that while Cindy Sheehan waits to speak with President Bush to vent her frustration over the death of her son, FoxNews finds a way to focus on what really matters: the "protest fatigue" felt by some of Bush's neighbors.

Wow. What a scoop.

The Pharisitical Church

| | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

This week, the Lutheran Church held a vote at their convention regarding the place of married gay people in the clergy. The measure failed 503 against to 490 in favor.

Earlier in the day of voting the Church voted 851-127 to keep the church unified in spite of a serious split concerning the role of gay people in the church.

I am constantly distressed by what I see to be the pharasitical movement in the church constantly taking precedence over what I believe the church is really supposed to be about. Jesus walked with the unclean, he healed the sick and unworthy, he tried to refocus the direction of people's spirituality from one of law and rules (as exemplified by the Pharisees in the Bible (yes, I know that current scholarship does not bear out them being such heartless hard-headed pricks, but I'm going off of the accepted archetype right now)) to one of love and caring and compassion and faith.

To put it another way, it is common to see protesters gather at Mormon events decrying them as unchristian and doomed to spend eternity in hell. When Brennan Hawkins went missing in the mountains of Utah while on a Boy Scout trip, the Mormons in the area cancelled church, and gathered en masse to find him. They put aside the legal way of thinking (I better get to church or I'm not worthy to go to heaven) to find someone who was in great peril. Now, I am the last to applaud the culture or actions of the LDS most of the time, but I think that if Jesus were here now, he'd tell the pharasitical dickheads protesting out front of the Mormon churches to put down their placards, put on their hiking boots, and follow him up the hill with the Mormons to find that boy.

Blogshares

In a fit of vanity, I googled all of the websites that link to mine and I found Blogshares.com. I was surprised to see my site on there being traded like a public company, but hey, cool!

Perusing through their site (it needs some UI help) I found out that Melissa owns the second highest amount of shares after me (as the owner I get 1000 shares automatically). Wow.

Cool.

Uhm, hey Melissa! Thanks for taking a chance on my site.

Butt Funk vs. Gourmet Cheese

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

I have noticed something that disturbs me and I want to reach out to all the other parents out there that might be having the same issue. As a father and pet owner, I consider myself something of an expert on the various odors an ass can make.

But once in a while, one of my children will make something so powerful and aromatic that it instantly reminds me of expensive fancy gourmet cheeses.

Of course, no one's going to wax poetic about the pleasing scent eminating from my son's diaper, but I swear to God, put his butt next to some feta (fetid?) cheeses I've had, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Of course, this also raises the issue for me: given the similarity of odors between the two, is there a particular wine that goes well with wiping his ass?

LP Meeting Tonight

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

So the monthly LP meeting is tonight. I feel inclined to say:

"What are we going to do tonight?"
"The same thing we do every night, try to take over the world!!!!"

But that's not quite a libertarian thought is it?

Upgraded

I just upgraded to the new version of MovableType to get all the fun new features. I'm hoping to put up a new face on my website this year, but we'll see. I'm kind of busy now.

Let me know if you notice any issues on the site while using it.

Wow

Wow. This man deserves a painful and hideous death.

I mean, we've all experienced having a spouse or signifigant other nagging us to come to bed when we're up doing something, BUT REALLY???? Beating his wife 70 times with a hammer right after they've had sex just because he wanted to watch SportsCenter.

Microsoft's Handling of Claria

| | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

I am very suspicious of Microsoft downgrading Claria's definition in their anti-spyware tool. I'm all the more frustrated because I like the tool and I think that it works very well, and it's probably been the best one I've tested out of a bunch (in a vain attempt to keep family member's computers clean).

Much has been made of Microsoft's announced intention to buy Claria, and given the change in the anti-spyware tool I think that Microsoft is playing fast and loose with the rules.

Originally I thought that maybe Microsoft was just buying Claria to shut it down and put the nuisance down once and for all, but that's apparently not the case.

I don't care what kind of cool technologies Claria has, Microsoft buying it is like Ford buying the company that makes slim jims because of their "innovative door opening tools". No good.

Red Sox Radio

Holy Shit, the Red Sox Radio Podcast on mysportsradio.com is awesome. It's hosted by a kid, Alex, who has to be about 13, but he's SOOOOO in depth, he's got personality, he's fun to listen to.

I'm not the only one who thinks so: he's going to be on the Today Show (Aug 10th 2005), and on Sirius Radio talking football. This kid's going place fast.

I'm hooked. Keep it going Alex. You rock!

Future Trends In Terrorism

| | Comments (2) | TrackBacks (0)

I have thought for a while that there would be 3 trends in terrorism that would start to emerge as terrorism now seems to be some extremist asshole's preferred method of doing business. The London attacks have shown that I was right about the first one:

1. More terrorists will now come from places like India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. This is occurring now. In western nations, the U.S., Canada, across Europe, desi are a quickly accepted minority, especially in big cities. As more people come from the sub-continent, our comfort level with them grows. This can work against us though. There are many muslim in that region, and some of the more extreme forms of Islam come from that area. Consider, for example, the Deobandi form of Islam, which is what the Taliban practiced. It is Indian in origin. I believe that terrorist groups will work to use our comfort level against us. This will in future manifest as muslims from further East acting as terrorists. In several years we will see people from Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and other countries that are to western eye indistinguishable from Chinese people as terrorists.

2. Terrorists will attempt to sneak into the US across the US - Mexican border. Again, in an attempt to use our own perceived comfort level against us, terrorist groups will try to move operatives across the US/Mexican border to infiltrate the country. I realize this is by this point well known, but it does bear keeping in mind, especially considering the amount of talk given to offering amnesty to illegal immigrants, and allowing Mexican truck drivers to travel across the US without special permit requirements on the US side. It only takes a few people who look enough like they are from Mexico driving a few trucks of explosives into middle of America to cause widespread chaos.

3. Eventually, groups beyond our borders will employ the idea of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and groups like Al-Qaeda will look to tap into the domestic groups like the ALF to attack targets on this soil. I feel it's only a matter of time before these lunatic nutjob Animal Liberation Front people feel that they can further goals by getting money, training, and supplies from larger terrorist groups, and attack something big to try and make a point. Again, it works because we are complacent about your average white granola-eating hippie.

By hitting us where we're most complacent, the terrorism has its greatest effect. It makes us wonder who we can trust and cannot, forces us to question the people on our very block, and strikes at the root of those freedoms that make us a truly great country.

Anyway, I just wanted to put these out here and foster some discussion. Let me know what you think.
