Noah Webster's Grave On Fire
Tue Sept. 6, 2005 11:24 AM ET

New Haven, Connecticut (Reuters) - Officials at the Grove Street Cemetary have confirmed that the grave of Noah Webster, father of the Webster's Dictionary is on fire.

Noah Webster Asked whether or not this is a case of arson, police and cemetary officials could not comment, but said rather they were looking into the matter and would release their findings as soon as possible.

Noah Webster first published the American Dictionary of the English Language in 1806, changing many spellings of common English words to a more phonetical spelling.

The Webster grave marker is a large obelisk behind a fence in the the Grove Street Cemetary, which is one of the oldest cemetaries in New Haven, Connecticut. While the area around New Haven has seen an increase in crime in recent years, the area around the cemetary is very peaceful, and acts of serious crime are nearly unheard of.
