A Supreme Court Seat Quota?

| | Comments (3) | TrackBacks (0)

So the President picked his choice for the Supreme Court: Harriet Miers. A bunch of people came out going "Oh that's so fabulous, another woman. We needed another woman on the court. This is fantastic!" I call bullshit (but you probably already knew I would).

Why do we need a quota of seats on the Supreme Court? Can't we just pick from the entire pool of candidates regardless of sex and ethnicity? Perhaps we should have a period of seeking candidates where all people are listed purely on their accomplishments and opinions and we're not allowed to know gender or race and we then pick the top 15 candidates from that pool on qualifications alone. I know we can't do that because we don't want them beholden to the public, but still...it makes me sad.

I was very disturbed by this nomination, mostly because we know zip about her.. seriously, she's been bushy-boys lawyer for years.. okay, so does that qualify her to be a SUPREME COURT justice?? While i understand that there have been justices appointed who were not Judges before, they have been high level attorneys... by that I mean the Attorney General of the US, as i believe renquist was... I very much fear her as a puppet of the bushy poos...
as for gender.. if the court should reflect the nation that it represents, then truthfully 7 of the 12 should be women since more than half of the population is female..( sorry inner feminist is a raging) but more strongly i feel that the highest qualified individuals should be on that court and sorry... this lady's CV just doesn't hold up for my tastes...
I would still really like to hear what she has to say during the congressional confirmation hearings...

To me, it's not even about the seat quota. It's about him doing a favor for his personal counsel. Now, maybe I'm wrong, I'm certainly no judicial expert, but doesn't it make sense, that if you're going to appoint someone to the SUPREME COURT, the supposed highest court in the land, then should they not have some kind of judicial experience, and maybe have served as a judge at some point in their life?

I went through a listing of all of the potential selections, and this woman was NOT, to me anyways, one I viewed as "well-qualified." Yeah, maybe he does feel a need to get a woman on there, but I think he would do better by filling the "Hispanic quota" and nominating someone like Alberto Gonzales, who appears to be up to the task, or several other Latinos.

I gotta be honest with you. I was really sad Bush didn't nominate a midget.
